Metrolanes features 16 tenpin bowling lanes over 4 areas, with bar, restaurant and entertainment areas in a high quality environment that is a break from traditional tenpin bowling venues. Located in the Metro Centre building below cinemas and above restaurants, it borders Aotea Square in the heart of Auckland’s entertainment precinct.

Our Brief
Marshall Day Acoustics' involvement included:
- Internal acoustic treatment – targeted acoustic treatment integrated with the architectural vision. This included hard surface finishes above the lanes with a series of hanging feature baffles to reinforce bowler feedback, high performance sound absorption suspended ceiling system above service and seated areas to support conversation. Perforated wall treatments in feature areas.
- Sound insulation design – between tenancies to control noise transfer, particularly from the repetitive thump of bowling balls hitting the lane surface. Achieving adequate airborne and impact sound insulation was a particular challenge with the constraints of the existing building structure.
Challenges
The goal of the acoustic design was to create a lively entertainment environment that accentuated pin ‘crash’ feedback to the bowler, while supporting communication at service and seated areas.
Control of bowling and entertainment noise was also essential to ensure compatibility with adjacent acoustically sensitive tenancies, including a series of cinemas above.
