Marshall Day Acoustics is delighted to announce that it has been engaged as the acoustic designer on the New Melbourne Conservatorium of Music project (MCM). Marshall Day Entertech has also been engaged to provide theatre and AV consultancy.
The new building, designed by John Wardle Architects, will consist of educational and performance facilities for staff and students, including a 443-seat cantilevering auditorium, a 200-seat ground-floor studio and a range of rehearsal studios and spaces for teaching, performing, recording and research.
The MCM is Australia’s oldest and most prestigious music institution, and is the largest community of music students and academics in Australia. It has a distinguished history reaching back to 1879 with the award of its first music degree.
The co-location of the Victorian College of the Arts and the MCM on the University’s Southbank Campus, together with other artistic disciplines and institutions such as the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Melbourne Recital Centre and Arts Centre Melbourne, will have far-reaching benefits for the Faculty’s teaching, research and engagement activities.
Marshall Day is proud to be part of the design team on this culturally significant project and has an excellent working relationship with John Wardle Architects, having delivered several award winning projects together, including the Victoria University Learning Commons Project and University of Tasmania Marine and Antarctic Studies Centre.
The new MCM is seen as a “once in a lifetime” opportunity for the Faculty to achieve its strategic objectives of becoming a world-leading cultural institution and aims to provide an excellent working environment to encourage high quality teaching, learning and performance that will be contextually relevant within the Melbourne Arts Precinct.
Construction is anticipated to commence in 2017 and be completed in 2019 with a total construction cost in the vicinity of $105 m.
